For those of you who don't know when I say copy - Copy is the words you write
that are at the heart of everything you do while marketing your business.
Let me ask you something when you’re creating copy for social media, your emails, and your website, for whom do you create content? For you, for your potential client?
If you’re like most people, you struggle with knowing what to write, how to write, and when to write in a way that effectively converts readers into clients throwing money your way! 😂 Well, that's a visual representation of what we would be thinking.
Now when you’re creating content do you rip the bandage and overshare? Share less, or are you simply sharing content that is updates, or news related to your business, or are you merely bluntly selling?
I'm not saying it's wrong to create content that promotes your business, but the fact is that today’s audiences are smart. People don't like to be sold to, I bet you don't even like to be sold to either. You skip the ads and probably complain about them because many people come to social media to escape. To escape from their work life, their home life, or their lack of social life. And it is your job as a service provider to educate, entertain, and empower your audience.
Besides your images or videos, the copy or captions you put into your social media posts, on your website, or on your emails need to connect.
So how does that work? It sounds easy, but what does that mean?
Think of this as if you’re your audience can’t see, they are blind. You have to walk them through and show them how to get from where they currently are to where they want to be. You’re painting a picture with words, words that describe situations and feelings, that they may be thinking, struggling, or wishing.
Your words tell a juicy story as if you were reading a trailer movie. Only you can help them, only you can guide them through the sound of your voice. 🗣️ Where not to step, otherwise they would fall, or walk as slowly as they can so they don't lose their balance. You’re the conductor and driver where you want to take them.
And along the way, you will give them tips on what to do, not how to do it, because showing how means they can do it on their own, so they won't need you. You show them just enough to get them across. The more details you give them, and the less you assume they know or you think it's too long the harder it will be for them to connect with what you’re trying to explain. Details are what make your copy pop! It’s not oversharing.
Let’s say you want to share that you met a friend
You say, I met Ann
But you can say,
I met Ann over coffee or
✔️I met Ann over coffee at the new bistro around the corner from the office.
Obviously, I don't want you to become copywriters, but I want you to start looking at your copy in a different way.
Hell! I’m not a copywriter, but I do know what good copywriting looks like and I sure know what’s working on social media and what’s not. So I want you to look at your post as helping somebody live or embody that thing you’re putting out in the world. Your posts are helpful for people who want to be visually and emotionally stimulated.
And I want you to ask yourself this question:
What do I want this post to do❓
Because we’re not in the business of being lovely on social media. I want everybody to be lovely. But lovely does not pay the bills.
❗❗ Remember trust leads to conversations, and conversations lead to sales. I hope you "Copy that" 😉🔊 V
