Why “That’s Not My Brand” Keeps You Small | Branding Momentum Podcast Episode

I keep seeing the same cycle. And it's why service businesses feel like everything stops working.

First: "I don't do that."

Then: "That's not my brand."

Then one day they try it—in the most uncomfortable way possible.

And they use that as proof it was never for them.

This episode isn't about trends. This episode is about the moment your personal judgments quietly become business rules, and your business pays for it.

In this episode of Branding Momentum, we're breaking down why what you call "brand standards" might actually just be fear of looking like a beginner.

How the Cycle Works

We say things like:

  • "I don't do that"

  • "That's not my brand"

  • "That doesn't belong with my business"

  • "Where I live, you can't do that"

  • "Things are different here"

What this actually means most of the time:

  • I don't want to be seen learning this

  • I don't want to look like a fool

  • I don't want to be seen starting from zero

These are all judgments you have about that new thing you haven't gotten into yet. That you've decided is not for you.

You're not rejecting the tactic. You're rejecting the version of you at the beginning of something new that you don't know.

Why This Hurts So Much Right Now in 2026

Things move faster. People move faster and learn faster.

They hop on something even faster. They don't get years to warm up to something new. They just do it immediately.

And what feels new becomes normal, really fast.

Once it's normal because everyone's already doing it, nobody's applauding that you got on board. They only notice if you're doing it at all.

Ready to Stop Letting Your Ego Run Your Business?

If you're ready to separate what's actually off-brand from what's just fear of looking inexperienced, I can help.

Through my private consulting work, we'll identify where your personal judgments have become business rules, and what it's costing you.

We'll look at what you're avoiding (and why), what you're calling "not my brand" that's actually just discomfort, and how to make strategic decisions based on your business goals, not your ego.

Because the difference between a business that grows and one that stalls isn't talent or timing, it's willingness to be uncomfortable.

Examples You've Probably Lived Through

  • Email: People didn't hate email. They hated sounding salesy. Email got noisy. Got a bad reputation. But it calmed down and felt good again. The winners? The ones who learned to write like a person, not like a campaign.

  • Video: How many times have you heard (or said): "I don't do video." Which usually means: "I don't want to look stupid. I don't want to be dancing to music. I don't want to make a fool of myself. I don't want people judging how I'm moving, what I'm saying, what I'm doing." The ones who won weren't the ones who became influencers. They were the ones who just got comfortable being seen.

  • TikTok: "TikTok is for kids. That's not for me." Because when things are so niche at the beginning, you don't want to be associated with that. But things mature. And now you see businesses getting into TikTok every day. Entrepreneurs. New business owners. They're all there. They came later. It doesn't matter. You can still learn and be there.

  • LinkedIn: So many people say "I don't want to be on LinkedIn." You're a business. You should be there. Even if you don't want to post, you should be there just in case somebody wants to know about your service.

The Real Question

Here's what you need to ask yourself: When you say "that's not part of my brand," do you actually mean it?

Or is it something you simply don't want to do because you don't want to look like a beginner?

If you only do what you think you look good at, you won't grow.

You'll stay comfortable in your little cocoon, in your little world, without expanding and growing.
