How to handle PR and communications when you’re in a one-person show

Feeling like you're juggling projects, deadlines, AND building your dream service business all by yourself?  Been there, done that (it's basically the life of a superhero, right?)

I know for a fact that public relations and communication can feel like an extra hurdle you gotta fight on top of everything else.

Let me share with you 3 tested strategies to help you become a PR and communication master, even when you're flying solo.

1. Embrace your Story through Content Marketing

Imagine dropping knowledge bombs on a room full of potential clients at a networking event. That's basically what content marketing lets you do, virtually and 24/7! Think blog posts, engaging social media content, or even video guides – these are your PR ambassadors, showcasing your skills and building trust with your audience.

The key? Consistency is your superpower.  Studies show companies who blog regularly get way more traffic. Schedule your content creation in advance (preferably I recommend batching your content either once a week for 2 hours you set aside or 1 full day of content batching to have all your content ready for the month), use free tools like Canva to make your stuff look awesome (or you can also check out my templates and guides to save you time), and find your brand voice – the one that makes your ideal client say “Heck yeah, this is me!”

Example: Web developer extraordinaire? Share blog posts on website mistakes everyone makes, host “Tech Talk Tuesdays” on social media, or create a video guide on website maintenance basics. Showcasing your knowledge positions you as the ultimate website fixer-upper, and clients will come to you for help!

2. Team Up with Other Heroes: Collaboration is Key

Just because you're a solopreneur doesn't mean you have to go it alone. Partnering with other businesses who complement yours can expand your reach and take your message to a whole new level. Think: a graphic designer teaming up with a copywriter for a strategic content series, or a yoga instructor teaming up with a healthy meal delivery service for a “Wellness Week” promotion.

Why it's awesome: Partnerships expose you to new audiences, it opens up your world to different people that don’t know you, to potentially working with you, it builds trust through association (like, hey, this other cool business trusts them!), and it's a win-win for everyone involved. Plus, it saves you precious time!

Example: A social media consultant could team up with a life coach to offer a “Boost Your Brand Online” workshop. Both businesses gain access to each other's audience and establish themselves as valuable resources in their niche. See? Teamwork makes the dream work!

3. Become a Social Butterfly (But the Strategic Kind)

Social media isn't just about cat videos and travel pics (although, let's be real, those are pretty great too). It's a powerful PR tool that lets you connect with your audience directly, build relationships, and show your human side.

The trick? Be intentional with your social media presence. Tailor your content to each platform, join conversations (people love to feel heard! You got that right, listen more), and participate in relevant online communities. Share your expertise, but don't forget to show your personality – people connect with people, not robots!

Research says - Social media marketing can seriously increase your lead generation (that pipeline that you need to grow ALL the time) compared to traditional marketing.

Example: Are you a financial advisor? Host a Q&A session on 𝕏/Twitter about managing student loan debt. Join Facebook groups focused on personal finance and offer insightful comments. By being present and helpful online, you establish yourself as a trusted go-to expert and attract clients seeking financial guidance.

Remember, PR and communication aren't about instant results. They're about building relationships, trust, and ultimately, a thriving business. By putting these strategies into action, you'll be well on your way to becoming a PR and communications rock star, even as a solo service-based superhero!

Now, go north, spread your wings and conquer that audience!
